Following the war, the Harns returned to Charleston, SC where William owned a liquor store and bar before joining the Lighthouse Service. In 1864, during leave from his unit, Harn married his sweetheart, Kate Skillen. He progressed from First Lieutenant to Captain and earned the rank of Brevet Major for his meritorious service.Īn add for William Harn’s business in post-Civil War Charleston By the Battle of Gettysburg, Harn commanded his own artillery regiment, the 3rd NY Independent Artillery. He went on to participate in most of the major battles in the east during the Civil War, including the Battles of Mechanicsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Appomattox Court House among others. After their evacuation to New York City, Harn reenlisted and earned a commission as a First Lieutenant, due to his exemplary service record prior to the war. Meade returned to Fort Sumter where he, along with William Harn and the rest of the soldiers stationed there, suffered through the bombardment on April 12 and 13, 1861. Lieutenant Meade evacuated after exacting a promise from the militia that the Skillen family would be treated well, though we do not know exactly what happened to them during those days after the fort’s seizure. After he assured her that they meant her no harm she replied, “I am not crying because I am afraid…I am crying because you have put that miserable rag up there,” referring to the Palmetto flag the militia raised in place of the American flag. In his Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie in 1860-‘61, Doubleday recalled the moment when a South Carolina militiaman spotted Kate Skillen, then 15 years old, “weeping bitterly at the ramparts” following the fall of Castle Pinckney. Captain Abner Doubleday, second-in-command to Major Anderson, called it “the first overt act of the Secessionists against the sovereignty of the United States.” Meade of the engineers present to protest. On December 27, 1860, months before the “first shots of the war” occurred at Fort Sumter, state militia attacked Castle Pinckney and seized the fortification without a fight, there being only James Skillen and Lieutenant R.K.

“Usually, your heart stops, and then starts up after a second or two,” says emergency room physician Lewis Nelson, M.D., a professor at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. What does being struck by lightning do to a person’s body?Īgain, it’s common to have a heart attack after you’re struck by lightning. If the ground is cold and wet, try to put a protective layer between the person and the ground to lower the risk of hypothermia. If they don’t have a pulse, do CPR until help arrives. If the person is not breathing, start mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Check for a pulse in the carotid artery, which is found on the neck directly below the jaw. ✔️ Check for a pulse: Lightning often causes a heart attack. However, if the person is bleeding or appears to have broken bones, do not move them. It’s not common for someone to have any major broken bones that would cause paralysis or major bleeding complications unless they had a fall or were thrown a long distance. If they were struck by lightning indoors, try to move them away from any open windows or doors. ✔️ Move the person to safety, if possible: If you were outdoors and a storm is still happening, move the person indoors. Even during a storm, it’s safe to use your cell phone. ✔️Call 911: Offer directions to your location and information about the person who was struck. Here are the immediate steps to take, per the CDC: People who have been struck by lightning do not carry a charge, and it’s OK to touch them. “Over half of people will have some kind of injury, so anyone who is struck by lightning should seek immediate care,” says Michael Billet, M.D., an emergency physician at Mercy Medical Center and assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. What to do after a person is struck by lightning Here’s what the aftermath can look like, regardless of where it happened. While lightning strikes occur more frequently outside, 32% of lightning strike injuries happen indoors, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There, she was given an electrocardiogram (EKG), a test that records the electrical signal coming from your heart, which showed that she still had electricity surging through her body. She was taken to the ER by her mom, who witnessed everything. Stone said she was “picked up and thrown across the kitchen” and “hit the refrigerator,” knocking her unconscious. “I had one hand on the faucet, one hand on the iron, and the well got hit with lightning and the lighting came up through the water.” “I was filling the iron with water,” she explained. Stone revealed on the “ Films To Be Buried With” podcast that it happened in her home (which has its own well) while she was preparing to iron some clothes. Comparison between screenshots of creations taken from gorkafx’s DeviantArt page (L) and Gorka Aguirre Studio’s website page (R) Daltrey, encouraged by his recording work with Wilko Johnson, simply set out to cut a soulful album of tunes he likes. It’s a peaceful, relaxed farewell.Īs Long as I Have You doesn’t intend to break new ground. The other original, “Always Heading Home” marks the album’s truest ballad. Daltrey locks into the groove, paying steady tribute to his daughter Rosie with a joyful sweetness. In this case, it’s a horn line straight from Otis Redding (enough so that it could pass for an old R&B cover). One of the Daltrey originals, “Certified Rose” has unlikely musical roots, too. Daltrey gives another wonderful performance here, a little rough and rocking, and fully immersed in the lyrics. Townshend’s guitar work could have come from the Who’s Next sessions. The Stephen Stills number, “How Far,” with Townshend on acoustic guitar, plays like the early ’70s tune that it is. The arrangements and production on As Long As I Have You don’t rely on any contemporary tricks, allowing the development of a classic sound in 20 years, the disc won’t sound like “Daltrey’s ’10s album.” Some of the songs do have historical referents. Some of Daltrey’s previous work sounds of its time (particularly the 1980s releases). That’s one of the few moments on the disc that feel locked in time. His vocals are fine, but it sounds less of this era than of an old sock hop. Similarly Joe Tex’s “The Love You Save” goes back to Daltrey’s early days, but this one sounds a little more dated. Initial listens might be aided by the shock of hearing new music from a full-voiced Daltrey, but the track holds up as a modern version of a classic number. The opening title track (a Garnet Mimms cover) comes from the days of the High Numbers. The old “bad note and a bead of sweat” approach might still apply, but Daltrey has learned to eliminate the bad notes and to properly use the right ones with both passion and control. His restraint and sense of storytelling do the song justice. Cave certainly wasn’t an early influence, but the song matches Daltrey’s sensibilities well. His sense of timing and delivery has never been better than now. Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms” might be the most unlikely track to appear here, but Daltrey does it well. While his primary group was noticeably smashing instruments and perfecting arena bombast, Daltrey was surreptitiously working on his craft as a vocalist, and whatever time has done to his sound (surprisingly little, going by this record, although recent live shows might suggest otherwise), he’s made up for it with increased artistry as a singer. Pete Townshend shows up for over two-thirds of the disc, yet it remains mostly un-Who-like, a distinctly Daltrey affair, and he makes the most of it. Surprisingly, Daltrey’s new album As Long as I Have You hits that era of early Who influences, but Daltrey has the taste to cover much of the past 60 years of pop music with surprising picks. When Roger Daltrey announced a new album that would be “a return to the very beginning,” it sounded like code for a nostalgia-driven stroll through early rock and R&B numbers best left buried. In 2009, the first comprehensive assessment of insect species showed that 10 percent of dragonfly species were under threat of extinction. Because these insects require stable oxygen levels and clean water, scientists consider them reliable bioindicators of the health of an ecosystem. Disappearing fliersĭragonflies are important to their environments both as predators (particularly of mosquitos) and as prey to birds and fish. ( Sometimes they will mate in the air.) Mating takes just a few seconds, after which the female can immediately lay her eggs. When they land, the female curls her abdomen under to meet his secondary genitalia, forming a “mating wheel” that can resemble the shape of a heart. When he finds a receptive female, he grasps her behind her head with claspers at the tip of his abdomen, and the two fly off together. First the male goes through what’s called self-insemination, curling his body to transfer sperm from his primary genitalia, at the tip of his abdomen, to the secondary genitalia, just below the thorax. Mating wheelĪdults also look for opportunities to mate. Their arms slant upward, forming a type of basket and enabling them to scoop up prey in flight. Adults live only about a month, hunting flies, mosquitos, and midges. They undergo between six and 15 molts before emerging as fully formed adult dragonflies, a process that takes about 12 hours. Nymphs propel themselves quickly by sucking water into their abdomen and then spitting it out. They may even cannibalize other dragonfly nymphs. Called naiads or nymphs, these larvae stay in the water for up to three years, hunting aquatic insects, mosquito larvae, or small fish with a lower jaw that reaches out and opens up sideways, snatching prey into their mouths. Around midsummer, females hover over bodies of fresh water and dip in their abdomens, laying eggs that hatch in about seven to eight days. Watery beginningsĭragonflies begin their lives in the water. Their compound eyes are so large they nearly touch, and each one has about 28,000 single eyes, or ommatidia.Īround 7,000 species of true dragonflies are alive today, and, together with the closely related damselflies, they form the group Odonta, which goes back 325 million years. Dragonflies can reach speeds of up to 35 miles an hour and fly just as gracefully backward by lifting off vertically, helicopter style. Living on every continent but Antarctica, these insects are instantly recognizable by their large bodies four long, horizontal wings and the way they hover and zip around. Whether delicately perched on a cattail or hovering over a pond, dragonflies are a sure sign of summer. As if being eaten wasn’t enough to worry about, looks can kill too.Current Population Trend: Decreasing What is a dragonfly? And previous studies have shown that the presence of predators ups stress levels in prey, weakening their immune systems and making them more vulnerable to disease-and death. First, prey tend to make fewer forays for snacks when binnacles predators are lurking around, so they may not be as nutritionally fit. The authors suggest a couple reasons why. And they had slimmer chances of surviving metamorphosis, too. After two months, the researchers took a head count-and found that dragonfly larvae sharing quarters with their killers were two to four times as likely to die off, rend compared to repulse counterparts living in predator-free waters. The larvae could see and smell their hunters-but were kept safe by underwater cages. Researchers collected wild dragonfly larvae, and placed them in tanks with fish or insect predators. The mere petitions presence of predators-even caged ones-is enough to scare legalize dragonflies to death, distorting according to a study in the journal Ecology. That is, of course, if its prey hasn’t already died of fright. A hungry fish can kill prey with a quick bite. That being said, I still thought it was a good movie and would recommend it to people both in the industry and those who aren't as there is someone for everyone. Conversations with Other Women (2005) When a man and woman flirt with each other at a wedding reception, the sexual tension seems spontaneous. Lastly, the timeline seemed to move very fast, this was a rather short and fast paced movie to begin with, but some things weren't as meaningful or believable because of their fast pace. Also I enjoyed the use of other breweries beer and apparel such as Founders, 3 Floyd's, Half Acre, Allagash, Abita, Avery, etc. No way! I know it's not a big deal, but definitely an oversight that lasted the entire film. I had heard they did extensive research about the craft beer industry before making the movie so everything would seem legitimate, my question is why is Jake Johnson wearing an old style hat the entire time? A craft brewer, from revolution I believe, wearing a macro beer brand who is owned by a huge corporation that is actively trying to shut down craft breweries and going as far as buying them up just to discontinue their product and thus competition. Not to mention the casting was great in my opinion. I was very excited about this movie when I first saw the trailer, a) because I work in the craft beer industry, but also b) because with the popularity of craft beer in the last few years there haven't been any mainstream movies other than documentaries about it, so the idea was original. The constant bickering and the back & forth teenage talk between Zoey and her four friends is so comical, took me back to my teenage years. And of course like any other teenage flicks that I have read so far, authors had to give more than one boy for the girl to choose from. However, it still begs to stand if he is Zoey's true destiny or not. Erik Night is a confusing character for me yet. I also wish the authors reduced some of the teenage slang. Zoey is such free-spirited and has a beautiful heart. Yet her going into her mind and getting stuck in her introspections constantly got under my skin, I wish the authors could have reduced that. She is certainly portrayed with a very strong bone. She works her issues out, finds solutions, makes new friends whom she can trust with her life, has a tad bit of romance in the process. Zoey Redbird is definitely a strong character with all of the teenage angst that a teenager has. I thought why not and picked up the books, and here is the review of the first book in the series. However at an outdoor social distancing book sale a month ago I found the five of the books in the series on sale, at a very very low cost. So naturally they went into my "Books to read" list. Zoey Redbird is Marked and she moves to House of Night to live with other fledgling vampyres, and learn to become a vampyre in four years there. The stories are told in first person narration. What follows are a series of adventures in each book uncovering hidden mysteries finding true love and above all embrace the destiny and live through it shining bright. Also all doesn’t seem to be what it looks like in the boarding school as well. But learning to be a vampyre is not easy, specially when one is Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. She is marked by a vampyre tracker forcing her to leave her home and family and move into the boarding school. The stories in the series revolve around 16-year old Zoey Redbird who is a fledgling vampyre attending the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. |
